UNIVERSITIES IN INDIA


UNIVERSITY OF DELHI:
Delhi University is one of the Top Universities in India. University of Delhi - DU was established in 1922 by Government of India. It has 14 faculties, 86 academic departments. It offers courses various undergraduate and post-graduate courses.

The University of Delhi is the premier university of the country and is known for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts eminent scholars to its faculty.

Delhi University has grown into one of the largest universities in India. At present, there are 16 faculties, 86 academic departments, 77 colleges and 5 other recognised institutes spread all over the city, with 132435 regular students. DU is now spread across 69 acres of green, hilly terrain and its buildings blend attractively with the natural surroundings.

Delhi University has necessary facilities like the computer center, WUS health care center, USIC, University Press, Bus Pass counter, Coffee House, Cooperative Store, Gandhi Bhavan, Garden committee, Railway reservation counter, SBI, Post Office and University Guest House are available to the students and staff.
UNIVERSITY OF MUMBAI:
University of Mumbai was established in 1857. It is one of the oldest and best universities in India. Mumbai university is accredited by NAAC with Five star grade.

The profile of this University of Mumbai carved out in 150 years of its functioning attests to its manifold achievements as the intellectual and moral powerhouse of the society. MU has always given its best to the country in general and to the city of Mumbai in particular by enthusiastically shouldering an ever-growing load of social values and opportunities.

Mumbai University has two campuses of area 230 acres and 13 acres, with 1.25 million square feet of built-up area, 22 thousand sq. feet of class-rooms and 84 thousand sq feet of laboratory space. It has two post-graduate centers, 354 affiliated colleges and 36 Departments. It has established its name in industrial collaborations and runs various professional courses.

University of Mumbai has always given its best to the country in general and to the city of Mumbai in particular by enthusiastically shouldering an ever-growing load of social values and opportunities. In the last five years it has seen 104% increase in under-graduate students, 112% increase in post-graduate students and 147% increase in distance - education students. There is 156% increase in the number of research papers published in International journals. 12 Department/sections are recognized under various national programmes, such as SAP/CAS/DRS/DSA/COSIST/FIST. More than 80 teachers are on various professional bodies. 18 National/International awards are won by teachers in the last five years. Every year about 20 teachers visit abroad for academic activities. Recently more than 10 self-supporting courses have been started by the University

UNIVERSITY OF PUNE:
University of Pune was established in 1949 under Bombay Legislature act. Pune University is One of the premier & Oldest educational institutions in Maharashtra. It is spread over an area of 411 acres.

The Pune University houses 46 academic departments. It is popularly known as the 'Oxford of the East'. It has about 118 recognized research institutes and 269 affiliated colleges offering graduate and under-graduate courses

University of Pune attracts many foreign students due to its excellent facilities. It offers good accommodation facility. There is a provision of hostel for the students. There is a well-stocked library containing plenty of books regarding various subjects. The university offers different scholarships to the students. The university conducts seminars and conferences for the students.

Pune University offers B.A, B.Com, B.Sc, BAMS, BPharm, B.Ed, BDS, BCS, M.A, M.Sc, M.Com, MCA, MBA, MPharm, M.Ed, MCH, MD, M.Phil, PhD Courses.

BANGALORE UNIVERSITY:
Bangalore University was established in 1886 in Bangalore. The university is spread over a vast land of 1111 acres. There are over 50 post graduate courses offered here which are recognised by the UGC of India.

The Bangalore University gave birth to universities like Visvesvarya Technological University, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science and the National Institute Mental Health and Neuroscience. The university has an Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) which has been included by ISRO for astronaut training for the Indian space program. Bangalore University has been awarded Sir M Visvesvarya chair from ISRO to perform research in space science.

Bangalore University is engaged in research through MoU with foreign and local universities, organizations and institutions. Numbers of its departments are identified by UGC as Centres of Excellence.

UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS:
University of Madras was set up in 1857. It is one of the top universities in India and the oldest university in India. Madras University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the five star rating first, and later with an A rating. The UGC has recognised the University as one of the centres for potential for excellence in the country.

Madras University is the mother of almost all the old Universities of southern India. The University area of jurisdiction has been confined to, however, 3 districts of Tamil Nadu in recent years.

University of Madras offering teaching and Research programmes in 4 Campuses of Madras University. The 68 University Departments of study and research are spread over in 4 Campuses organised into 18 Schools each of which offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specialisation, part time and full time Ph.D. Programmes, Diploma and Certificate Programmes.

Madras University offers distance education Courses as well as Open University facility to help students who can not continue with regular classes.

The Madras University has about 43 external research institutes. At any given time, there are over 8000 students enrolled in different graduate and post-graduate courses of the university. A 300 member strong faculty caters to the all round development of the students.

AMITY UNIVERSITY:
The Amity University has been established by an act of State Legislature and recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) through the Act of State Legislature. Sikkim Manipal University - SMU was established in 1995. It is the first government-private initiative in the region. It was set up with the objective of providing the best in education for students. SMU is recognised by the University Grants Commission and approved by the Government of India.

Sikkim Manipal University is recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of HRD and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and Recognised by Distance Education Council (DEC)

Sikkim Manipal University - SMU provides courses in IT, Engineering Management, copmmerce, Hospitality, Journalism & Mass Communication, Biotech and Health Sciences.

Sikkim Manipal University Distance Education programme main emphasis is to make available quality education to learners who have constraints of work, geography or those with financial and family constraints as well as learners with limited access to higher education.

ANNA UNIVERSITY :
Anna University was established in 1978 as a unitary type of University. It is spread over 100 hectares in the city of Chennai. This university is recognised by the UGC of India.

Anna University offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society.Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained therefrom, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities.The University was formed by bringing together and integrating two well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras.

The Anna University ,which is of the affiliated type is a member of the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Partner of UNESCO International Center for Engineering Education (UICEE). UGC have accredited Anna University with Five Star Status in 2002 which is the highest rating. With proven capabilities both in academic and research areas, Anna University was able to receive this honour for a period of five years for excellence in Technical Education.

Anna University offering many facilities for the benefits of students. The foremost among them is the Computer Society of Anna University, which is a very prestigious technical body. It was set up to make the students take interest in the area of computers. Under its flagship, a large number of events are held during the year. The Anna University library is also another important body of the university. The library has almost 10,157 users. ANNAMALAI UNIVERSITY:
Annamalai University is a State university in Annamalai Nagar, Tamil Nadu which was established in 1929. Annamalai University is one of the top universities in India under distance learning / open category. This University is recognised by the UGC of India.

During the last eighty two years the Annamalai University has grown rapidly and has consolidated its position as a unitary and residential University with forty-nine Departments of Study and over 3240 members on its teaching staff. Annamalainagar is already a busy and full-fledged University town, east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja

Annamalai University is providing various facilities like hostels for both boys and girls, main and central library, explicit Yoga center, sports complex and auditorium, staff recreation club and co-operative stores and other facilities like hospitals, guest house and captive power generation. Besides there are some other facilities like services of National Cadet Cops, student cultural club, Heart Foundation, Youth Red Cross, Social Service League, Blood Donor Clinic, Chest Pain camps and also the Rural Development Services.

Annamalai University offers courses in Applied Psychology, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Bioinformatics, Law, Fashion Design, Textile Design, Interior Design, Hotel Management and Catering Technology Programmes, Retail Management, Twinning Programme, Programmes on Health Science, Commonwealth Youth Programme, Yoga, Music, Fire and Safety, Pharmaceutical and Taxation Programmes.

UNIVERSITY OF LUCKNOW:
University of Lucknow was established in 1921. The Lucknow University is recognized by UGC and is considered one of the top universities in north India. It offers various undergraduate. postgraduate & doctorate courses in different feilds.

University of Lucknow as recognized 48 associated colleges for the teaching of undergraduate courses. Some of these colleges have also been permitted to undertake postgraduate teaching in various subjects.
Lucknow University provides residential facilities to teachers, students and non-teaching staff. There are over all 13 hostels for boys and girls in the University. Kailash Hall and the New Management Girls Hostel can house nearly 600 girl students. Extra-curricular and employment needs of the students are taken care of by various centres and associations, such as, Delegacies, Athletic Association, Centre for Cultural Activities, Information and Employment Bureau and Centre for Information, Publication and Public Relations.

JAMIA MILLIA ISLAMIA UNIVERSITY:
Jamia Millia Islamia (National Islamic University) was established in 1920 by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. The University is located in New Delhi. It offers Various Bachelor , Master & Ph.D courses in different discipline.

Jamia Millia Islamia universisty was made a central university of India in December 1988. In the list of the Faculties, i.e. Education, Humanities & Languages, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences. Engineering & Technology, one more Faculty - Faculty of Law, was added in 1989. Many new courses and programmes at UG and PG levels have since been added.

Besides its six faculties, the Jamia Jamia Millia Islamia university has a number of centres of learning and research, like Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC), Academy of Third World Studies (ATWS) etc. The Jamia is also marching ahead in the field of Information Technology (IT). It offers various undergraduate and postgraduate IT courses. Apart from this, the Jamia has a campus wide network which connects a large number of its departments and offices.

Jamia Millia Islamia is historically counted as among the most important nationalist institutions in India today. Jamia Millia Islamia University offers courses under Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Humanities and Languages, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics.

PUNJAB UNIVERSITY:
Punjab University was established in 1882. It is is one of the oldest universities in India. PU Chandigarh is recognised by UGC. It offers undergraduate & postgraduate courses in Arts, Education, Business management, Engineering, Law, languages, Medical sciences, Pharmacy.

Punjab University, has 75 teaching and research departments and 15 Centers/Chairs for teaching and research at the main campus located at Chandigarh.

Punjab University, Chandigarh has 188 affiliated colleges spread over Punjab and having one rural Regional Centre at Kauni, and 3 Regional Centres at Muktsar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur.

Punjab University main campus at Chandigarh is spread over 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25, and having fairly well-marked zones: the teaching area in the north-east, with the Central Library, Fine Arts Museum, and three-winged structure of the Gandhi Bhawan forming its core; the sports complex, the health centre, and the shopping centre in the middle; 16 university hostel and residential area in the south-east, stretching into the adjacent sector 25 which also houses the newly developing University Institute of Engineering and Technology and Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of dental Sciences and Hospital, UIAMS, Institute of Biological sciences etc.

The UGC has selected Panjab University for an academic collaboration with Oxford Brookes University as our chosen partner. Also Department of Atomic Energy of GOI has selected PU as a node to be connected to National Knowledge Commission (NKN) with high network bandwidth.

UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA:
University of Calcutta also known as Calcutta University was established in 1857. It ranks among the top universities in India. The university was recognized by UGC. It is one of the oldest university in India. Calcutta University is the only university in India which produced four Nobel laureates and has ranked consistently amongst the first five hundred universities in the world.

Calcutta University has sixty five departments organised into eight faculties:- Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Commerce, Social Welfare & Business Management:, Faculty of Education, Journalism and Library Science, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Fine Arts, Music and Home Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science

University of Calcutta has 18 research centres, 650 teachers, 3000 non-teaching staff and 12,400 post-graduate students

BHU - BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY:
Banaras Hindu University ranks among the first few in the country for research and academics. BHU was establised in Varanasi in the year 1916. It is recognised by the UGC of India. BHU has two campuses, 3 institutes, 16 faculties, 140 departments, 4 advanced centers and 4 interdisciplinary schools.

BHU today has nearly twenty thousand students including 2500 research scholars and 650 foreign students from 34 nations, under one roof who are pursuing different academic programmes at this campus as well as the newly established Rajiv Gandhi South Campus. These are some of the brightest young minds in the country and abroad, who have joined this University after clearing a rigorous All India Entrance Test.

BHU is the largest residential university in Asia. It has been developed as a center for education in Indian art, music, culture and philosophy and for the study of Sanskrit. The campus also houses the Bharat Kala Bhawan that has a fine collection of miniature paintings and sculptures that dates from 1st to 15th centuries. The 5-square kilometers campus of BHU, houses as many as 55 hostels. The campus has other attractions too such as the Birla Mandir that is popularly called VT. Close by is an airstrip and a flying club. The central library named Sayajirao Gaekwad Library is also worth a visit. Apart from various manuscripts and periodicals, it houses as many as 14 lacks or 1.4 million separate volumes. There is a 1000 bedded hospital too. It is called Sir Sunder Lal Hospital. Apart from concrete buildings, the campus features open spaces, greenery and peacocks, the national bird of India, which are found roaming around almost every part of the university.

Banaras Hindu University conducts national level Undergraduate (UET) and Postgraduate (PET) entrance tests usually during May–June for admission to various courses. Admissions are done according to merit in the Entrance Tests, subject to fulfilling of other eligibility requirements. Admissions to B.Tech./B.Pharm., M.Tech./M.Pharm. are done through JEE and GATE respectively. Admission to MBA and MIBA are done through IIM-CAT score. Admissions for PhD. are done on the basis of either qualification of NET by the candidates or through the scores of CRET (common research entrance test).

JNU - JAWAHARLAL NEHRU UNIVERSITY:
Jawaharlal Nehru University - JNU was started in 1970. JNU is recognized by UGC. The University has more than 1000 acre campus at New Delhi. The name of the University was after the name of the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
JNU is located in the southern part of New Delhi and spread over an area of about 1000 acres. The University has 10 Hostels for Boys and Girls, three Guest Houses, Sports complex has a Sports Stadium with office.
Jawaharlal Nehru University - JNU is mainly a research oriented postgraduate University with approximately 5,500 students and a faculty strength of around 550. JNU is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world. JNU's School of Social Sciences is at the 57th position among the world's top 100 institutes for social sciences.
JNU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil. and research courses through various schools and centres of the university, that makes JNU different from other universities in the country. JNU is the only university in the country that provides free coaching facility to the aspirants willing to get admission in the university.
